Buffalo continues to burnish its reputation as an amateur athletics Mecca with the recent signing of several high profile, high impact events, the Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau announced today.
The 2007 United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Junior Gold Championships will be held in Buffalo July 7-13, 2007 and will boost local coffers by more than $1.5 million. Nearly 1,500 people will visit Buffalo during the championships and will require in excess of 6,000 hotel room nights. USBC views Buffalo as an ideal summertime location for the national scratch tournament.
Buffalo successfully bid against Detroit and Rochester for the USBC event. The CVB credits the national site selection committee's decision to Buffalo Niagara's growing reputation for hosting successful amateur athletic events and the strength of the local organizing committee.
"Our community has tremendous resources that we can offer prospective events, ranging from the Pepsi Center to the Flickinger Center at ECC to the UB athletic facilities," said Richard Geiger, President, Buffalo Niagara CVB. "The investment the state and our community have made in these facilities is being repaid countless times over by the presence of these athletes and their families and supporters."
In addition, the Buffalo Niagara CVB recently has booked - in conjunction with strong local organizing committee support - five future hockey events; two swimming events; an archery event; softball championship; and a soccer championship that will bring more than 13,500 people into town, use nearly 32,000 hotel room nights and impact the local economy by $6.3 million.
